This is our second in a series called The Art of Discipleship where we showcase the material of different books and engage with their material creatively.

WEEK TWO

The activity this week is taken from:

Christi-Anarchy: Discovering a Radical Spirituality of Compassion and you can read a little more about it here from the first time I read it if you’re interested.

This book by Dave Andrews goes into the fact that Jesus Christ preached a gospel of love and peace with justice but the history of the Christian religion is littered with every kind of evil – What went wrong?

Mediation:  Dave Andrews poem speaks to Jesus’ compassion, his hunger for justice,  and desire to work with marginal groups for real transformation in our world – inviting us to live this way too through the eyes of the disciple Peter.

The prologue of Christi-Anarchy: Discovering A Radical Spirituality Of Compassion retells Dave’s unfortunate history of being kicked out of YWAM many years ago.  This lays the foundation for the rest of the book – a grave injustice done in the name of Christ. At micro and macro levels…

The very first chapter of Dave Andrews book is called:

A History of Christianity: A History of Cruelty

And it’s broken down into 4 areas:

-Councils, Creeds & Coercian: ca. AD 100-500
-Emperors, Popes & Power: ca. AD 500-1000
-Crusades, Inquisitions & Control: ca. AD 1000-1500
-Worldwide Evangelism, Witch Hunts & Genocide: ca. 1500-2000

So you can see how this is not an easy read – to really ‘look’ at the history of the church (our church) and to try and grapple with how this relates to our own understanding of who Jesus was and the way that he lived.

What I’m hoping to create tonight is a bit of a meditation space reflecting on Dave Andrews words speaking to Jesus’ compassion, and his hunger for justice, his desire to work with marginal groups for real transformation in our world and inviting us to live this way too through the eyes of the disciple Peter – speaking into the disillusionment or cynicism we might sometimes feel towards our own church/discipleship movement.

To give you a bit of an overview about where this is going – you will want to make yourselves comfortable because I’m basically going to try and read this like a play/well… a monologue… and it’s going to take about 20 minutes – I’m going to make the room dark because I want you to try and  visualise the scene  and put yourself in  Peter’s shoes.  I’ll leave things dark and quiet for a few minutes while people reflect and then bring us back together for sharing/prayer…

So, from the macro to the micro for Peter to set the scene and condense the bible into a paragraph… we know from the oral history passed down and recorded that the people of God were slaves under Pharoah, led across the Red Sea to freedom, wanderers in the desert and led across the River Jordan into the Promised Land – Jerusalem, they finally have their own sovereignty: a line of Kings: Joshua, Saul, David, and Solomon … who turns from God’s ways and the city is destroyed in Chronicles, rebuilt in Ezra,  and restored in Isaiah then a series of prophets come… the day is coming when Israel will be judged for its sins, prophesies of the birth of one to come… after Babylonion captivity, they are under the domination of Persia…IMG_5065

We fast forward 400 years between the
Old Testament and the new – and Rome is now the dominant power… Herod the “great” is slaughtering male children, under a star somewhere in Bethlehem a child is born, in a dark and troubled place…

Jesus is born – the next great political leader, descending of Kings, fulfilling the prophecies –  who would lead the uprising to free the people from Roman oppression and win back the independence of the Jews!!  Jesus says “Truly, this very night, before the rooster crows you will deny me 3 times” and Peter responds, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” And all the disciples agreed.

Except that Jesus didn’t really behave the way people expected… didn’t lead the way we expected, fight the way we expected… died when we didn’t expect it

Arrested, disgraced and denied three times… Peter broke down and wept.

Reflection questions:

  • what thoughts/feelings are arising?
  • …since I read this on the internet it must be true: Palestine is the most fought-over country in the world, and Jerusalem is the most captured city in all history. It has been pillaged, ravished, burned and destroyed more than 27 times in its history… paradox of peace and conflict in this area…
  • What is Andrews’ Jesus role modelling here around community conflict? (e.g. promises we make and can’t keep) what pathways back to wholeness are role modelled here? (e.g. be honest with one another, share meals, communicate openly…)  What can you honestly and openly offer? What are our experiences of where this has worked/not worked well?

Over a series of weeks we will dip into a breadth of creative activities, drawing from a variety of resources, that invite us into a space where we encounter God and reflect on our Christian life and praxis. To give a loose sense of connection across the series we’ll frame them with an Opening, close with a Benediction and include a time of prayer each week.  We recognise everyone as spiritual beings and welcome people of all faiths and none.  We encourage you to bring a journal or blank notebook if you have one.

WEEK ONE

The Artist’s Rule: Nurturing Your Creative Soul with Monastic Wisdom

This book by Christine Valters Paintner draws on The Rule of St. Benedict summarised in the phrase “pray and work,” it explores the mutually nourishing relationship between contemplative practices and creative expression.

We did the Wisdom cards activity together.

For those playing at home you will need:

  • 3 x sheets A5 watercolour paper (for each person)
  • Invisible tape
  • Watercolours
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pens to write
  • Magazines to cut up words and images
  • Glue sticks

The first thing we do is prayerfully consider a question we might ask our inner child (what do you visualise when you hear the words “inner child”?) –  write this question on the back of one of your A5 sheets of paper. You can decide for yourself if you want your canvass landscape or potrait!

[Tip: This is not a magic 8 ball.  You will get a lot more out of this exercise if you ask BIG open-ended, existential type questions like “Who am I?” and “What is the meaning of all of this?” over small questions like “Should I buy tickets for the Mumford and Sons concert?”]

Next, our inner Wise One (what do you visualise when your hear the words “inner Wise One” or monk?)  – write this question on the back of another of your sheets of A5 paper.

And thirdly, a question we might ask them both together.

Turn these so they are blank side up and shuffle them around so you aren’t sure which question is on which card.  Now tape them down to the table, blank side up, with the invisible tape.  This stops the paper moving around while you’re painting and gives your work a clean border when you peel it off later.

If you’re resource sharing, at this point some might paint while others cut up magazines.  It doesn’t matter what order you do this in.  Flick through some magazines and cut out anything that jumps out at you. Words, phrases, images… anything that captures your attention or seems to speak to you.  Once you have a decent pile in front of you switch to painting and colour as you feel.  Some will instinctively feel bright and light, or dark; be highly detailed or minimal splashes of colour – there is no right or wrong way to do this. Go with your gut.

Now collage. Drawing from your pile – try this image with that phrase – does it fit with this one of your cards or that one?  You might need to go back to the magazines, you might find you only use 10 of the 40 things you cut out. It doesn’t matter.  Your cards will kind of speak to you, when the right words and images are assembled you will hear them and know that the card is “finished” and you can glue everything down in place.

Now you can gently peel away the invisible tape and see which question is written on the back of which card. Consider what synergy there is between our questions and these creative answers, the premise being we can often know answers to our own questions but we have to sneak up on ourselves to figure it out. Write these reflections in your journal.

Find somewhere to prop your  cards for a week where they can be a visual cue.  In a week, sit with your notebook again and see if there is any further learning/awareness to be drawn from your wisdom cards.

My blog posts almost feel like signposts, pointing out the way to You that I have followed but it would look like this… The thing with You being everywhere, the centre and the edges, maker of all things… Your fingerprints are all over everything and everyone who has ever been. It really isn’t all that hard to find You if people are truly willing to “look”.  I don’t want people to focus on reading the signposts.  I want them to commit to “looking.”

Being creative can be difficult if I approach a project intellectually, but then let go of the idea and let the art speak to me, become a conduit, become reflective and contemplative.  This also happens when I write, I can get stuck but trust that something meaningful will come. I watched the stained glass windows while at church when I was a child. I assumed the windows were ‘old’ but they were in fact ‘new’.  Eyes were known as the window of the soul so craftsmen made the eyes of stained glass images larger. The windows live in the light, illuminate, narrates and alters the light that comes into the church – this art dies in the dark.  Trinity chapel was built at the same time as the war broke out so it memorialises some students and staff who fought.  Plans changed to incorporate imagery of “warrior” saints over the next twenty years. The last panel, the crucifixion, went up once the second war had started.  These windows became memorials of prayer to visit where there was no body and no grave of loved ones lost.  Good, one hundred years on, to still gather here.

Further to our Stations of the Cross walk on Good Friday I made a lift-the-flap book for each of the families that participated.  How can we bring the messages of the high holidays into the everyday?  Kids know who cartoon and TV characters are because they are shown images of them, if we want them to learn to recognise our elders we must show images and share the words of these people… you cannot know what you haven’t learned, what you haven’t learned you cannot love.

Ubi Caritas – Solesmes

Ubi Caritas is taken fro th anitphons sung during the ceremony of the Washing of the Feet at the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday.  As is the entire Mass of the Last Supper, this hymn is intimately connected with the Eucharist, and is thus often used during the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.  Recent tradition has the first line as “Ubi caritas at amor” (where charity and love are), but certain very early manuscripts show “Ubi caritas est vera” (where charity is true).  The current Roman Missal favors this later version, while the 1962 Roman Missal and classical music favours the former.

I had set the reminder for the Night Watch but I wasn’t really yet asleep or yet awake or yet warm (I must have six blankets and have slept through in my long woolen cardy, ghoulish, but eventually warm).  There is a little electric fan heater but I know the energy they can go through and I like the idea that I can be active enough or layered enough or in bed enough  do not need it.  Although many of the curtains of the caravan are open or down there is no trace of dawn light yet – only darkness without and the wind.  Within my flickering candle to write by… me… and You.  In the mix of what my life is, this Awakening Hour has been the prayers I would read most often on a normal day – albeit closer to 8.30/9am – I think I like to start my day with this taste of joy and the call to be bigger than I am through somehow revealing love and light in the way that I live.  You do that for me.  Call me into a life worth living, call me into a life worth getting out of bed for. …which in fact, I will not do right now, but lie back and listen to the wind talking in the trees and watching the veil of the sky draw back.


So… Leunig… one of the question he is most often asked and is always baffled by, is what does a particular cartoon mean.  “People will say, ‘I don’t know what it means but I like it.’ And I’ll say, I don’t know either but I like it too.  I’m not trying to say anything but I hope it awakens something in you.”

Leunig is a blessing and, I think, Your faithful servant.  I so admire his not being constrained t o one medium or what he is “supposed” to do or say – letters, poems, paintings, cartoons, interviews, expositions, prayers – I don’t imagine there is much that Leunig holds back between contemplation of hisIMG_5082 big toe (an honest fellow) or his loneliness or his love life or his politics… this is all one and I envy that.  Even as I read/write that I am thinking to myself – whose permission am I waiting for?  to be my whole self?  I like to think I am getting there, learning – or unlearning – as the case may be.

Each day is a new day and I dwell in possibility.  This is one of the big lies of culture I think, that we ‘have’ to do these things – finish school, finish uni, get a job, get a house… do we ‘have’ to?  Once you are on the conveyor belt it can be hard to get off but I dwell in possibility.

Am I a temple?

Perhaps some other building turned to Your purpose, but the wilderness has broken in and the overhanging branches arch  protectively and let gentle dappled light through.  Let’s not renovate or do it up but make the ordinary sacred – the structures yielding to nature in time yet inside a beautiful sanctuary. Let there be gifts and songs and blessings… let it be fit for You to dwell.

This morning I wandered further along the road from the retreat centre.  I got out my new technicolored skipping rope and went up and down the road. My body memory recalling the hop-step motion of my feet and my wrists to swing forwards and backwards and side-to-side.  I imagine my movements are graceful, I suspect they are no such thing, but they feel so and I have a few moments of childlike abandon.

A few months ago, I saw ‘As You Like It’ at the Botantical Gardens… it was over the top and beautiful and funny.  I was much taken with the idea of leaving [bad] love letters in the trees that did not rhyme or make sense but were somehow endearing yet for being sincerely felt.  Today I did this for You – what faltering words do I have to try and describe You or worship You that haven’t already been said before? Let’s laugh at me together and find me endearing for a whimsical love sincerely felt…

Like Leunig, I don’t suppose I am satisfied with communicating.  I want to talk to You in poems and journals, prayers, reading, walks, talks, storytelling, listening and notes left in the trees for You to find.  Bio-degradable paper with native daisy seeds in it! But I couldn’t quite bring myself to leave them up.  Others won’t know what they are made of and it wouldn’t do to antagonise or pollute in the name of God.  How am I to speak of You? How am I to speak to You? Show me the way that You would have me go, step by step and day by day, moving forwards, being found.


3.30pm The Wisdom Hour

p.125 We seek to live a more contemplative life, so that we will not have to wait until we are dying to learn to live… Give us the grace of tender seeing. Help us to recognise and honour the wise one who lives at the core of our being. May we always be open to being taught.

I had a nap in my last “hour”. I wanted to be warm and rest and rest in You. But now, as day deepens, I am out and about again.  I might pass this way but once – through the chestnut orchard, qi gong in a clearing… I tried to move like the wuthering wind and the singing bird, holding myself and the others in this space, opening ourselves to You and the tenderness that comes of that – from the holder to the touched.  I tried to get to the creek but I did not really know where I was going – all was lush and green and somewhat impassable (at least per this afternoons excursion) and I wandered away to find an old swing hanging low amidst the carpet of fallen orange leaves, walking onwards I have found a tree. A good climber. And here I am, rugged up, in my blanket, in a tree…

6.30pm The Twilight Hour

p.144 My eyes scan the horizon of your goodness… a thousand colours is your face.

Come, sit at our table.  Be present in the bread we break and share.

205We shared communion, You and I, and I have attempted to set things in order for tomorrow as we will be leaving early – rendered slightly complicated by the power going out but here indeed is living simply after all and, possibly, my cue to go to bed at 8pm at night because it’s dark. I’m in bed and have only a warm glow of a candle to see by – pretty but perhaps not functional… at least for this.  Perhaps it depends what you are trying to do… what then by candlelight?

Candles are often romantic light. Softening edges, smoothing out wrinkles.  Gentle light for tender things like touch and feelings… holding back the dark.  I can be beautiful by this light too.  More helpful.  More comforted.  We take all of who we are wherever we go and while mistrust is a bedfellow so is faith.  While loneliness may pay a visit, faith dwells here and I am never alone.  In our darkness there is no darkness. And the softness and the sensations and sleep and serenity are all my own.
