She makes an unlikely preacher’s wife.  She says so herself.  But she never flinches from any of it.  Mary Magdalene probably made an occasional casserole, whatever the ancient equivalent might have been… I mean only respect when I say your mother has always struck me as someone with whom the lord might have chosen to spend some part of His Mortal time… There is an earned innocence, I believe, which is as much to be honoured as the innocence of children… When the Lord says you must ‘become as one of these little ones’ , I take Him to mean you must be stripped of all the accretions of smugness and pretense and triviality.  “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb’, and so on… It has pleased me when I have thought your mother felt at home in the world, even momentarily.  At peace in it, I should say, because I believe her familiarity with the world may be much deeper than mine.  I do truly wish I had the means to spare you the slightest acquaintance with that very poverty the Lord Himself blessed by word and example… still it shames me to think that I will leave you and your mother so naked to the world – dear Lord, I think, spare them that blessing.

I get much more respect than I deserve.  This seems harmless enough in most cases.  People want to respect the pastor and I’m not going to interfere with that. But I’ve developed a great reputation for wisdom by ordering more books that I ever had time to read, and reading more books, by far, than I learned anything useful from except, of course, some very tedious gentlemen have written books.  This is not a new insight, but the truth of it is something you have to experience to fully grasp.

                                Thank God for them all, of course, and for that strange interval, which was most of my life, when I read out of loneliness, and when bad company was much better than no company.  You can love a bad book for its haplessness or pomposity or gall, if you have that starvling appetite for things human, which I devoutly hope you will never have.  ‘The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.’ There are pleasures to be found where you would never look for them.

A good sermon is one side of a passionate conversation.  It has to be heard in that way.  There are three parties to it, of course, but so are there to even the most private thought – the self that yields the thought, the self that acknowledges and in some way responds to the thought, and the Lord.  That is a remarkable thing to consider.

I read somewhere that a thing that does not exist in relation to anything else cannot itself be said to exist.  I can’t quite see the meaning of a statement so purely hypothetical as this, though I may simply lack understanding… My grandfather had nowhere to spend his courage, no way to feel it in himself.  That was a great pity.

…I can’t tell you though, how I felt, walking alon

This song was written reflecting on the Love Makes A Way movement which seeks to see children freed from detention. But even as I wrote it I felt a sort of grief – not just that of refugees heartsick for a safe refuge, a place at the table, but imagining God talking about a kingdom where this is not the way things were supposed to be.  It felt like God was saying “There is room here, let Me move…” whatever boundaries or limits or problems you are carrying today… maybe there’s a pattern of behaviour you’d like to see change, of your own or someone else.  A situation of your own or some else where you feel bound or stuck or like you don’t have any choices – whether you’re feeling that personally, for loved friends or family… for strangers on a boat… As we sing together – hear God saying “There is room here, let me move….”

In Luke, Jesus looks at his friends and says “I’m so glad we get to share this last Passover meal together ‘cos I’m not going to get to do this again with you until the kingdom of God comes.

The kingdom of God hasn’t come.

But part of why we do this ritual is to remember… to remember that resurrection is ours, God’s kingdom will come if we participate in building it and love makes a way.  Let’s eat and drink together… and take that promise in.

Sing about it until it can be realised” is a quote from Ched at the Kinsler Institute earlier this year… a call to write, play and sing the songs of freedom until freedom is won.  During Love Makes A Way (LMAW) actions some supporters stay outside to bear witness to the action – singing, praying and advocating for those within.  So far this draws heavily on the freedom songs of the Negro Spirituals, changing the lyrics to familiar tunes but what are the songs for and from our own context?

Started brainstorming how these songs are effective/communicate… says without saying, not religious language but accessible, short, call and repeat/memorable/simple/easy to pick up, capture sadness/grief…

Here’s a couple of goes at playing around:

And who is already speaking for these issues? who are our own voices in the wilderness calling for a world that is different?  Michael Leunig is an Australian cartoonist, poet and cultural commentator, I’ve appropriated some of his words from a cartoon and arranged them so this can be sung as a round which is beautiful because when you’re looping “love is born” rings out through and over the “dark and troubled” and “when hope is dead”.

LMAW songs

Mayra & I attended the Kinsler Institute earlier this year, and were impacted by Bill Wylie-Kellerman’s workshop on Resistance and Public Liturgy and felt inspired by the Detroit walk to imagine what this might look like for our own context – what are the significant places in our neighbourhood? what are the stories that we need to hear? that we need to tell? These questions were somehow infectious and representatives of different faith communities and social justice projects came together collaboratively in our neighbourhood in a really beautiful, special and significant way around the issues of forced closure of aboriginal land, treatment of detainees in detention centres; multi-faith and multi-cultural engagement, climate change, permaculture, homelessness, and asylum seekers.

We wanted something specific to our cultural context and the resource  we based our walk on (7 Healing Rites for 7 Sites) draws on an indigenous reconciliation resource created by Dr Norman Habel – thank you Indigenous Hospitality House for pointing this out to us – and stories from our indigenous elders, Aunty Doreen Wandin on the Southern Cross constellation being a symbol of home and for navigation and Uncle Wanta Jampijimpa on the 5 stars correlating to the wounds of Jesus on the Cross.

This is a bit of a photo essay (we did an action at each stop as part of our response to the stories).

Swap Super funds, make a giving budget, recycle water for flushing… these are some great commitments not achieved by my Household Covenant.

It’s 2012: I’ve just finished up at a proper job and Marita and I have taken in an Iraqi refugee, a young woman, named Shahad. We have scored a sweet deal on a low rent run-down Footscray house and I’ve just had a three month sabbatical visiting Bartimaeus Co-operative Ministries (BCM) in LA and returned home dreaming “What next?”
This expressed itself in the following, I’m sure annoying, way:

“At BCM I learned about cover crops and installed a timed irrigation system.   At BCM they shower over a bucket then use that water to flush. At BCM leftovers were upcycled into a new and different meal the next day so nothing was wasted. At BCM they don’t let you watch TV… they don’t even have a TV!”

…when the Household Covenanting series came up it seemed like a good way for my housemates and I to go on a journey together exploring ways of living sustainably and agreeing together on what some expressions of that might look like.

Where to start? Find meaningful part time work. One day per week in Footscray, no car, no screens. I don’t know about meaningful but I got an ABN and did contract administration – talk about part time – some weeks I had six days to be present in Footscray! While this part time lifestyle opened up opportunity for great projects (do maintenance on rental property – exceed minimum obligation, support Shahad, plant daffodils and tulips) it also wrought huge changes, suddenly go dumpstering is a weekly economic necessity, get piano lessons (subject to someone else’s expertise) isn’t financially viable and Marita’s family tradition of donating first income (giving this away as first fruits as gratitude to God) seems naive in the face of my irregular income. We imagined this spreadsheet tracking the-real-coffees-I-didn’t-drink forming, in part, the budget for our sustainability initiatives but I am instead dependent on the beneficence of my own friends charity to pick up my tab if they want a cafe catch up… This, THIS was in some ways where the real work/learning on savings, debt and poverty took place as I came to have a real and personal understanding of doing without – doing without ‘real’ coffee and inviting people to my home instead; doing without the safety buffer in my savings account led me, in fear and desperation, to rely on God’s providing and I received it in many ways and from sources I could not have imagined; doing without eating whatever I wanted when I felt like it and instead connecting with food seasonally by consuming food grown ourselves, sourced from Sharing Abundance[1] and dumpstered… I had to learn preserving methods, humble myself to let others pay for coffee, and give even though you don’t know where your next income is coming from. These are some great commitments achieved by my Household Covenant …and I didn’t even have them written down.

I could not have foreseen that supporting Shahad might mean leaving lights on across the house overnight to manage her fear of the dark over my desire to reduce power consumption (darn that was meant to be one of my easy ones). That my aim to buy second hand is overruled by her desire to have nice, new things that are her own for the first time in her life (we took her to IKEA for her birthday last year and she LOVED it!). Now I could understand what Jon meant when he told us ‘…the rule serves me, not me it’. My middle-class, educated reasoned choices to dabble in downward mobility cannot mean much to someone who has never had many of the choices and opportunities I have been given and part of my covenant should be to work to redress that imbalance. Perhaps I have not strictly achieved everything I set out to do but I am not unhappy with where I’ve ended up instead.

I do not know what will happen if you attempt a Household Covenant but I doubt you will be disappointed or find the attempt uninteresting… we plant daffodils and tulips every year now, although we moved house just last month and the bulbs were just tips pushing through the ground and we won’t be there to see them bloom, I wrote this: 007

“Reflecting today on the things we plant in the hopes of fruit to come.  We believe in planting so we do it but ultimately we have very little control over what grows and who it belongs to.  The pain is in our awareness of this and our discipline is planting anyway – even though we’re tired and someone else may receive the benefit of our careful tending, someone else may not like the plants we’ve chosen or where we positioned them and tear them out like weeds.  The thing that I value is only valued by others if they want it themselves.  What I grieve for, is not this house, much like another having four walls and a roof, but the harvest hoped for here that will not be realised by me. There is a large harvest, but few workers to gather it in.  Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest.”

Those little shoots felt like a metaphor for walking away from the sense of home we created in that place and the practices started that we now wouldn’t follow through. I hope God is sending me you, you know, not to go round and pick my ACTUAL daffodils, but to be a fellow worker in the field.

New housemates, new street, new garden… perhaps it is time for a new covenant.

“Hey, …Marita? …Shahad? …Ana & Atticus? You guys want to head to Ceres for some bulbs?!”

[1] www.sharingabundance.org is a food rescue initiative whereby produce is rescued from backyards and shared between homeowners, volunteers who pick and local community food programmes.
