“To whoever sees this…”

Someone called Grace has been leaving notes on a lamp post I walk past. And I came to wonder whether there is a person called ‘Grace’ or whether the grace is the space being offered, a gentle invitation to live into all you have it in you to be…

What grace-space would you invite others into? What counsel, what love letter would you leave on a lamp post?

Who am I?

autumn leaves in sunshine

Who am I?
Who is anyone?
To know what feeds
Your soul-hungers
deepest need?
The monk reads
The sower seeds
The mother feeds
The workers deeds
The calling leads…

Follow the calling.

of love

the early morning light
lays kisses on my skin,
the corner of my eye,
the soft neck below my ear,
even lays one on my hair,
a benediction on the air
of love

Here

020copyHere in this vortex of risk, vulnerability, hope and fear,
I stand with you.
Our paths are not the same
But for the ways in which they mix and
tangle in each other,
sometimes parallel,
sometimes perhaps at cross purposes,
yet never quite falling out of sight
I am glad and grateful.
May the journey bring answers,
growth and joy.
May the stepping out be its own reward.
May you be bold, and honest, and safe,
and return to me.

Rest here awhile

013

you, dear child

you exert so much energy

trying to be something other than

how you were made.

Rest. Rest in Me and know

that you are loved, you are

a delight to me and I am

proud of you – just as you are.

Come to me those who are weary

and heavy laden and I will give

you a real rest.

Rest. Rest in Me and know

that you are loved, there is no

one else you need to prove yourself

to or meet the expectations of,

there is no ‘right’ way or ‘normal’.

Each person must walk their own path

and I made each of you unique

– though your path may travel along

aside another’s, it may not, or may

not always and it is not given to

you to know the Way… I know

the Way. I AM the Way, and I am

with you always.

Rest. Rest here awhile with Me.

We can go on when you are ready.

Terns by Mary Oliver

Terns

Don’t think just now of the trudging forward of thought,

But of the wing-drive of unquestioning affirmation.

It’s summer, you never saw such a blue sky,

And here they are, those white birds with quick wings,

Sweeping over the waves, chattering and plunging,

Their thin beaks snapping, their hard eyes

Happy as little nails

The years to come-this is a promise-

Will grant you ample time

To try the difficult steps in the empire of thought

Where you seek for the shining proofs you think you must have.

But nothing you ever understand will be sweeter, or more binding,

Than this deepest affinity between your eyes and the world.

The flock thickens

Over the rolling, salt brightness. Listen,

Maybe such devotion, in which one holds the world

In the clasp of attention, isn’t the perfect prayer,

But it must be close, for the sorrow, whose name is doubt,

Is thus subdued, and not through the weaponry of reason,

But of pure submission. Tell me, what else

Could beauty be for? And now the tide

Is at its very crown,

The white birds =sprinkle down,

Gathering up the loose silver rising

As if weightless. It isn’t instruction, or parable.

It isn’t for any vanity or ambition

Except for the one allowed, to stay alive.

It’s only a nimble frolic

Over the waves. And you find, for hours,

You cannot even remember the questions

That weigh so in your mind.

A benediction

the suns warmth

a benediction on my skin

the birds sing

Amazing Grace to You

the breeze stirs

lifting my spirit with it

and I know, all at once,

why-I-am

cloud cover moves in

chilling

but it would be too intense

to remain in Your presence always

You are a lot to take in

it is better this way

in pieces

to appreciate and savour You

to be converted to grace

again and again

in discovery – a joy, in acceptance – hope

rebirth in eucalypt spice and…                       <repeat> the sun’s warmth…

When Jesus called, he said “Take nothing for you journey…”
Were the twelve afraid?
God’s peace be with you

Did they wonder if they could do these things?
Next to the quality of your ministry did they feel inadequate and unworthy?
God’s peace be with you

Did they want to postpone their journey until they had all the possible things they might need? Until they were sure of their abilities?
            God’s peace be with you

Did they want to hold off on a commitment until they were absolutely sure it wouldn’t be a mistake? Did they ever feel they had no time, no talent, no knowledge, no energy, no guaranteed results?

Jesus said “take nothing”, and they went.

They went with His power.

            God’s peace be with you.

Father God, I want to thank you for ——–, I want to thank you for calling them to be leaders.  There are times when responsibility can seem too much to bear and we wonder how we came to be here, to deserve this trust. That in ‘taking nothing’ we ‘have nothing’.  Grace each of them with the sense of peace of knowing you are with them, the sense of faith that is born of giving up our will to yours, and the sense of love that is born of forgiveness and communion.  May this spirit which passes understanding, and this grace which makes us what we are, and this fellowship of His communion make us one in spirit and in heart. Let them find ease in You who are our leader. We need not be afraid, for you are with us always. In Jesus name, amen.
